Interesting places in Trent

Trento, also known as Trident in Czech, is located in the northernmost Italian region of Trident-Horní Adige. It was probably founded by the Romans, who also gave it its name, derived from the Latin word tridentum, or trident, because of the three hills that surround it (Doss Trento, Doss Sant’Agata and Dosso di San Rocco) and whose layout resembled the shape of a trident.

Piazza del Duomo

This square is a mandatory starting point for a visit to Trento. Not only because it is its main center, but also because the most important city roads converge here. The square is dominated by the Cathedral of St. Vigil, but there are also other impressive buildings such as Palazzo Cazuffi, Palazzo Rella, Palazzo Pretorio and Torre Civica. In the middle of the square you will find Neptune’s Fountain.

Cathedral of St. Vigil

The cathedral was built on the foundations of an already existing early Christian basilica, the remains of which can still be seen in the crypt of the church. The building is an impressive mix of different architectural styles, from Romanesque to Gothic to Baroque, each reflecting a particular historical stage of the cathedral. The cathedral is world famous as the place where the so-called Council of Trent was held between 1545 and 1563.

Buonconsiglio Castle

This set of buildings, surrounded by high walls, is located slightly above the city and is a real museum center, which houses a rich collection of paintings, artefacts, sculptures and everything that tells about the art and culture of Trent from 11,000 BC to 1800 A.D.

The highlights include the Mastio di Castelvecchio, an impressive cylindrical tower, the Loggia Veneziana, from which you can admire the panorama of the city, and the Torre Aquila, whose interior walls are entirely decorated with frescoes depicting the changing of the seasons and months.
