The well-known city of Győr, Ráb in Czech, will once again be enveloped in the Christmas atmosphere from the end of November. A spectacular Christmas market awaits visitors with an abundance of gastronomic delights. It is therefore no wonder that the local markets are among the most popular Advent events in Hungary.
The main event will take place on the Dunakapu square, which will also offer a car track, a carousel and a Ferris wheel, and on the Széchenyi square, where an Advent light show and a cable car will be prepared , nativity scene or amusement park.

Győr Christmas Market Program
Győr’s Christmas markets will be officially opened on November 29, when light decorations will be switched on for the first time throughout the city.
Advent fairs in Győr will be held in several locations, the main one being Széchenyi tér. This square is easily accessible by public transport and by car. The nearest bus stop is about a 10-minute walk away, and parking is possible in the underground parking lot at Dunakapu Square.
You can also find other stands and attractions on Dunakapu tér, Baross út and Megyeháza tér. In addition to stands with a rich assortment, there will also be an accompanying program for young and old visitors, for example fire juggling demonstrations on Dunakapu Square or the lighting of Advent candles on Szécheny Square. Not even Mikuláš will be there.

How to get to Rab?
Travel by car
The city of Győr is located in the north-west of Hungary, so it can be easily reached by car from the Czech Republic. From Bohemia and South Moravia, the fastest route is via Brno. People from Northern Moravia and Silesia are offered an alternative route via Žilina. For residents of southern Bohemia, it is faster to travel through Austria.
- From Brno: Take the D2 towards Břeclav and Lanžhot, where you will cross the border with Slovakia. Continue on the D2 through Malacky and Bratislava, further south to the border crossing near Čunov. In Hungary, stick to the M5 motorway, at the town of Levél join the M1, this motorway will take you all the way to Győr. The length of the route is 205 km, estimated driving time 2 hours.
- From Frýdek-Místek: Follow the highway towards Český Těšín, exit at Hnojník and drive towards the towns of Jablunkov and Mosty u Jablunkov. You will reach Slovakia. Continue in the direction of Čadec and Žilina, after Žilina drive a short distance on the D3 highway, then connect to the D1 and drive past Trenčín to Bratislava. Furthermore, the route is identical to the route from Brno. The length is 355 km and the estimated driving time 3 hours and 35 minutes.
- From České Budějovice: Drive to Třeboň, then follow the E49 towards the Austrian border. In Austria, you will drive through the cities of Schrems and Horn to Vienna, then follow the A4 to the border with Hungary. The M1 motorway will take you to Győr. The route is 316 km long and the estimated driving time is 3 hours and 45 minutes.
Bus trip
You can also easily reach Győr by bus. There are lines that continue to Budapest. You can board in Prague or Brno. The journey from Prague takes 5 hours and 50 minutes, from Brno 4 hours and 45 minutes. The cheapest tickets cost around 450 CZK from Prague and 350 CZK from Brno.
Travel by train
Do you prefer the train? With a transfer in Bratislava, you can get to Győr several times a day. There is a direct train from Prague twice a day. It has stops in Kolín, Havlíčková Brod, Žďár nad Sázavou and Břeclav. The destination station is Budapest. It takes 6 hours and 10 minutes from Prague to Győr, tickets can be purchased from 700 CZK.

Thermal spas

Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
The construction of the basilica began in the 11th century. Today it is an important place of pilgrimage and the most magnificent building in the whole city.
Town Hall
Another important building is the Town Hall. Its tower is 59 m high.
Bishop’s Palace
The Bishop’s Palace stands on the Káptalandomb hill. The first buildings were built in the 13th century, but it took its present form only at the end of the 18th century. The residential tower is accessible to visitors. Climb to the top and enjoy the view of the city and the surrounding area.
Abbey House
The Baroque Abbey House (Áparúr Ház in Hungarian) stands on Széchenyi Square (Széchenyi tér), where the main Christmas markets take place. The building houses the Museum of Paintings, where you can see the works of Picasso and other 20th century authors.
Esterházy Palace
The magnificent palace belonged to the Esterházy family. Today it houses the Museum of History.
János Xántus Museum
Learn something new about the history of Hungary and the city of Győr. They are open every day except Monday from 1 pm to 5 pm.
Napoleon’s house
Napoleon spent only one day in Győr, but there is a house named after him in Královská Street (Király utca in Hungarian). The whole street is worth a visit, which recalls various historical moments of the city.
