Making candlesticks for the Christmas table: instructions and inspiration

Are you someone who loves to decorate the holiday table with beautiful candlesticks during Christmas?

Are you tired of spending money on overpriced and overpaid Christmas candles from stores?

Why not make your own candlesticks? We have some simple instructions for you to follow.

Wooden Christmas candlestick

If you are fond of wooden decorations, this candle holder will not only be easy to make but will also be a beautiful addition to your Christmas decor.

Things you will need:

  • Wooden cubes of different sizes (numbers depend on whether you want an Advent candlestick or just a decoration)
  • Wooden cutting board
  • Glue suitable for wood
  • Wood colors of your choice
  • Adhesive tape
  • Brush
  • Christmas decorations of your choice
  • Tea or electric candles

Method

  1. Paint the chosen natural wood cubes with the color of your choice. If you don’t want single-colored pieces, you can use insulating tape to mark stripes, for example.
  2. Paint the space created between the two types of insulating tapes.
  3. Wait for the first color to dry, then apply the second color. Ensure that the paint is dry before applying the second color and gluing the tapes on the painted part.
  4. Once all the candlesticks are dry, arrange them on a wooden base, ideally a cutting board.
  5. Stick them properly using glue. You can also attach tea lights to the top with glue on this occasion..
  6. Decorate the base according to your imagination. You can use a sprig of pine needles and a few rowan berries, flasks, or dried fruit.

If you have children at home, you can have smaller holes cut into the cubes to put the candles in. This will make the candlestick a bit safer.

Candlestick made of wine glasses

Wine glasses are stunning but extremely fragile, and it’s highly likely that you may end up breaking a few while handling them.

However, don’t throw away the remaining unique pieces that don’t belong to any set! Instead, keep them aside as they can be used to create beautiful candlesticks for your Christmas table.

What will we need?

  • Wine glasses (they can be of different sizes and shapes)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Small glass or plastic trees, figurines, flasks, baubles or other decorations
  • cardboard
  • scissors
  • ribbon or jute string
  • sugar
  • silver sequins (optional)
  • Candles of your choice (coarser low ones look beautiful, but tea candles will also work)

Method

  1. First, you need to create a base for the entire glass. Place the glass upside down on the cardboard and trace the shape with a marker.
  2. Cut out the outlined circles precisely – they shouldn’t be larger or smaller than the glasses.
  3. Heat the hot glue gun and start gluing decorations to the cardboard according to a pre-thought-out plan.
  4. Once everything is stuck and the glue has dried, turn the glass over to pour sugar and possibly silver sequins about a quarter of the way up.
  5. If everything is holding on to the cardboard, circle the edge of the cardboard with a hot glue gun and glue it to the glass so that all the decorations are inside it.
  6. Tape the joint with a ribbon of any color or a coarser jute string, depending on what style you want the candlestick in
  7. Finally, turn the glass upside down and place the chosen candle.

You can also prepare an Advent wreath this way. You need to place the candlesticks on a round (perhaps wooden) base, which you can decorate to match the glasses’ contents.

  • Fresh twigs from trees such as spruce, thuja, boxwood, pine, yew, and silver spruce

Method

  • Use the cutting pliers to divide the twigs into sections according to the size of the candlestick. You can leave some longer ones and put smaller ones over them to create a lovely effect.
  • Gradually stick the treated twigs one by one into the polystyrene base, leaving a bit of space in the middle for the candles that will come later.
  • Cut six weak wires and prepare a candle that will fit three wires each time. Heat each wire with a lighter and immediately insert it into the lower end of the candle.
  • The wires must be positioned so that they form a triangle when inserted. Allow the wires to cool, then coat the bottom of the candle with a little wax to hold them in place.
  • Insert the prepared candles into the polystyrene base with the twigs. Make sure they are secure and stable.
  • Finally, attach various decorations to the candlesticks using a glue gun and let them dry. This will add a festive touch to your candlesticks and make them look even more beautiful.
  • And there you have it!
