What is the Sunken Bell Legend about?
On December 25th, Lake Bled comes alive with the reenactment of the legend of the wishing bell. This story has been a part of Bled Island’s history for hundreds of years, and it’s said that anyone who rings the bell three times and believes in God will have their wish come true.
The story starts with a young widow living in Bled Castle.
She was deeply saddened after her husband was killed and his body thrown into the lake. To honor his memory, she had a bell made for the island chapel. Unfortunately, a storm hit while the bell was being transported, causing the boat and the bell to sink. Undeterred, the widow sold her belongings to build a new church on the island. She then devoted her life to God and became a nun in Rome. When she passed away, the Pope, moved by her dedication, had a new bell made. He said that anyone who rings the bell three times with a pure heart and strong faith would have their wish granted.
Even today, locals say that on quiet nights, they can hear the faint sound of the sunken bell echoing from the lake.
Whether or not you believe the legend, the reenactment is a captivating sight that adds a touch of magic to the Christmas season in Bled.
The reenactment of this legend takes place at the Castle Bathing Area, with divers from the Bled Society for Underwater Activities bringing the story to life. It’s a beautiful and moving tradition that captures the spirit of Christmas in Bled.

Interesting places in Bled to visit
Bled is a small town in the heart of Slovenia, located by Lake Bled on the slopes of the Julian Alps. It is one of the most sought-after tourist centers and attracts many tourists every year not only for its natural and cultural beauty but also for its thermal springs.
Church of the Mother of God on the Lake
The church has retained its current shape since the 17th century, following restoration after the second earthquake. The main altar features a richly decorated golden carving from 1747, representing the seated Mother Divine, Henry II, the donor of the Bled estate, and his wife Cunigunde.
The bell tower, originally built in the 15th century, has undergone several renovations due to damage from earthquakes and a lightning strike in 1688.
The current 54-meter-high bell tower houses three bells made by Samasso and Franchi, bell makers from Ljubljana. The church, along with other structures such as the wall and a monumental staircase with 99 steps, has maintained its appearance since the 17th century.
A notable feature is the wishing bell located on the upper roof above the church nave, as described in the legend mentioned in our article.
Bled Castle
