Interesting places in Klafenfurt
Klagenfurt, the capital of Carinthia, is located on the eastern shore of Lake Wörthersee, which is where the entire name of the city comes from – Klagenfurt am Wörthersee. The city is a perfect combination of culture, art, and nature and, thanks to its location, also an interesting crossroads of three different cultures – Austrian, Italian, and Slovenian.
Neuer Platz
The square where the Christmas markets in Klagenfurt are held is undoubtedly the heart of the city. It is lined with colorful Renaissance buildings, and in its center is the Lindwurm fountain with a dragon, which has become a symbol of the city.
According to legend, he once lived in the surrounding swamps and “fed” on young girls. One day, a group of daredevils managed to lure him out of the water and kill him. The city of Klagenfurt was then founded on this site.
Church of St. Egidio
Another important monument is the Church of St. Egidio, which houses the Fuchskapelle, or Chapel of the Apocalypse. This space was completely painted with frescoes by the Austrian artist Ernst Fuchs. It took Fuchs twenty years to create the work, which is considered one of the greatest oil paintings ever created.
The colors of the oil paintings are incredibly bright, and thanks to the skillful play of perspective, some details seem to escape from the depicted scene. The uniqueness of the depicted scenes is also due to the constant blending of sacred images with elements and characters typical of modern society. Between angels and religious figures, airplanes, bombs, or famous personalities from pop culture suddenly appear.
