Liège Advent Markets

The Christmas Village in Liège, or Le Village de Noël, is one of the oldest and largest Christmas markets in Belgium and one of the few significant Christmas markets in Wallonia.

Every year, a large number of visitors from all over Belgium and abroad head there. They admire the beautifully illuminated monuments around St. Paul’s Cathedral and let themselves be enchanted by the rich accompanying program.

Programme of the Litian Advent Fair

The Christmas markets in Liège have been held for more than thirty years and create a magical, fairy-tale atmosphere during the Christmas holidays in the very heart of the city. Their layout should resemble a real village, with wooden houses built along the streets and alleys, a square with a town hall, a church, and even a post office.

Advent markets in Liège enchant all gourmets every year. The city is the birthplace of Liège waffles, Galler chocolate, and piquet, the Belgian version of gin. You can find these gems in many stalls, as well as baked camembert, marzipan bûkète, and flatbreads made from buckwheat flour.

Interesting places in Liège

Liège is the most important city in the Walloon part of Belgium. In addition, it is located near the borders with Germany and the Netherlands. All this contributes to the fact that it is a very diverse mixture of diverse cultures and nationalities. You can enrich your visit to the Liège Christmas market by walking around its center.

Place Saint-Lambert

The city center is located on the beautiful Place Saint-Lambert. Until its destruction by the French in 1794, the cathedral of Saint-Lambert stood here. Today, there are metal columns that remind the place where it stood.

Near the Place Saint-Lambert is the Place du Marché with the Liège Le Perron Freedom Monument, and the Place de l’Opera with the Royal Opera House is also nearby.

Montagne de Bueren

This staircase from the 19th century leads to the remains of the former citadel, from which you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city. The name Montagne de Bueren is related to the fact that the steps are so steep that you will feel as if you are climbing a real mountain.

In 1881, after the battle for the defense of the Duchy of Burgundy, which took place here, a staircase was built in memory of the soldiers who lost their lives. You can diversify your climb up the 374 steps by stopping from time to time to explore the surrounding streets.

Saint Paul’s Cathedral

The Gothic cathedral was built between the 13th and 15th centuries on the site of a preexisting church from the 10th century. Inside is a rare treasury, which includes sculptures and goldsmith’s work dating from the 13th to 17th centuries. They were originally stored in the church of St. Lambert, which was destroyed by fire in the 18th century.

An interesting feature is the reliquary of St. Lambert, a life-size bust of the saint studded with gold, silver, and precious stones. According to legend, it contains the saint’s skull.
