Program of the Óbidos Advent Fair
During Advent, this already charming town transforms into a winter wonderland, home to the famous Óbidos Vila Natal, a Christmas market that attracts visitors from all over Portugal and beyond.
In the vicinity of the local castle, it will be transformed into a Christmas theme park, which is a lively mix of stalls and activities. Local artisans and vendors set up their stalls along the streets, selling a variety of goods, from handmade crafts and unique gifts to traditional Portuguese Christmas treats. The air is filled with the aroma of roasted chestnuts, sweet pastries, and mulled wine, adding to the festive mood.
The Christmas markets in Óbidos are famous for being aimed mainly at children. Popular attractions include ice skating, nativity scene, Christmas carousel ride, Christmas train, ice ramp and various workshops. The highlight is Santa Claus Village, where kids can meet Santa and take part in fun interactive experiences.
During the festival, several cultural performances are held in Óbidos. From traditional Portuguese music and dance to choirs singing Christmas carols. Since the main part of the Christmas village is located on the castle grounds, it is necessary to prepare for the fact that entrance is charged.

Interesting places in Óbidos
How many women can say they were gifted a village? One of them is Queen Isabella, who received Óbidos as a gift from her husband in the 13th century.
Today, Óbidos is one of the most beautiful towns in Portugal. During Advent, the focus is on the Christmas markets, but there is much more to explore in the city.
Óbidos Castle
The main tourist attraction in Óbidos is the local walls and castle, considered by many to be one of Portugal’s underrated architectural wonders. While the walls date back to the period of Moorish rule, the castle was built in the 13th century by order of King Dinis I, Isabella’s husband.
Originally, the castle was an austere structure, more of a fortress than a palace, with numerous towers and battlements. It became a palace only in the 16th century when it was completed with Manueline elements, and today, it is one of the most luxurious hotels in Portugal.
Rua Direita
Most of the buildings on the city’s main street are souvenir shops and restaurants. Thanks to the cobblestones, the flowers in the windows, and the handicrafts on display, the street has a very romantic and ancient atmosphere.
Aqueduct
The aqueduct, also known as the Aqueduto da Usseira, was built by Queen Catherine in 1573. It is about 3 km long and supplies water to two fountains in the city.
