When you think of Denmark, chances are Copenhagen pops up in your mind. But what if I told you that the true magic of Christmas lies in the charming city of Odense?
Nestled in the heart of Funen Island, Odense is Denmark’s third-largest city, and while it’s often overshadowed by its big siblings (we’re looking at you, Copenhagen), it absolutely shines during the holiday season.
With cobblestone streets, quaint houses, and a magical winter atmosphere, Odense becomes the perfect backdrop for a cozy European Christmas.
So, grab your hot cocoa (or gløgg if you’re feeling Danish), and let’s dive into the festive fun!
Odense Christmas Markets
Before we jump into the Christmas markets, let’s talk about Odense itself. This charming city is famous for being the birthplace of one of the world’s greatest storytellers: Hans Christian Andersen.
If you’ve ever heard of “The Little Mermaid” or “The Ugly Duckling,” you can thank Mr. Andersen, who grew up in Odense. The city has preserved its connection to Andersen’s fairy tales, and you can feel the whimsy and magic in the air as you stroll through its historic streets.
You might be wondering, “Why should I go to a Christmas market in Odense instead of somewhere else in Europe?” Well, let me tell you: the Christmas markets here are like something out of a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, only with more mulled wine and roasted almonds.
The market itself dates back several decades, and while Odense might not be as big as some of the other famous Christmas markets across Europe, it’s got something special—an intimate, storybook charm.

Christmas Market Program
The centerpiece of the Odense Christmas celebrations is the Hans Christian Andersen Christmas Market, located in the heart of the old town. What makes this market extra special is the way it embraces Andersen’s fairy tales. Walking through the market feels like stepping into one of his stories, with costumed characters, traditional stalls, and entertainment around every corner.
It’s almost like Disneyland but with way more Danish pastries and none of the mouse ears.
- A Step Back in Time: The market is inspired by the 19th-century era, so many of the stalls and entertainment are designed to transport you back to Andersen’s time. You’ll see actors dressed in period costumes and old-fashioned carousels and hear traditional Danish Christmas songs floating through the air.
- Delicious Danish Treats: Prepare your taste buds! You can indulge in a variety of festive Danish treats like æbleskiver (think pancake puffs dusted with powdered sugar) and the aforementioned gløgg (a Danish take on mulled wine). Trust us, after a cup or two of this stuff, you’ll be warmer than a Viking in a sauna.
- Unique Handmade Gifts: Forget the usual department store holiday chaos. The market is a great place to pick up some one-of-a-kind gifts. Whether it’s hand-knitted scarves, locally crafted ceramics, or traditional wooden toys, you’re bound to find something to take home as a keepsake.

You can find the Christmas tree in Flakhaven Square in front of the town hall. This year, it will be lit on November 16. Every year, this event marks the beginning of the Oden Christmas season, and in connection with it, a varied musical and entertainment program takes place throughout the city.
Beyond the Christmas Markets – Other Must-Visit Spots in Odense
While the Christmas markets are the main draw during the holiday season, there are plenty of other amazing things to see and do in Odense. In fact, you could easily spend a few days exploring the city and still not see everything.
Here are a few highlights:
Hans Christian Andersen Museum and Birthplace
Since you’re already here soaking in the Andersen-themed holiday magic, why not take it a step further and visit the museum dedicated to his life and work? It’s an enchanting place that both adults and kids will enjoy. Plus, it’s just around the corner from the Christmas market!
In 1905, the house, measuring only 72 square meters, was bought to turn it into a small museum, which opened its doors just three years later. It brings visitors closer to the life and work of Hans Christian Andersen in a unique way.
St Knut’s Cathedral
The impressive Gothic building is named after the Danish King Knut IV, who is regarded as the last Viking monarch. In 1086, he was murdered while praying in a wooden church that existed at the time. He was canonized shortly after his death. Later, a cathedral was constructed on the original church’s site, and the king’s remains are now preserved in a glass coffin. Today, Saint Knut is recognized as the most significant saint in Denmark and serves as the patron saint of the entire country.
Town Hall
A short distance from St. Knut’s Cathedral stands the Neo-Renaissance Town Hall. This building is linked to Andersen, as his grandmother was imprisoned here for having three illegitimate children. A prison used to be located in the basement of the Town Hall. Additionally, Andersen was granted honorary citizenship of the city at this location in 1867.
