What will the Advent markets be like in Brno this year? Program and important information in one place

There is no better city in Europe this year to wait for Christmas Day than Brno, as Brno has been named the European Capital of Christmas 2024!

Looking for a Christmas market experience that’s a little off the beaten path? Then head to Brno, Czech Republic! This lively city comes alive during the holidays with festive markets, twinkling lights, and delicious Czech treats. Trust us, it’s worth discovering!

Nestled in the heart of Europe, the Czech Republic, with its rich history and stunning architecture, offers a magical setting for the holiday season. And while Prague might be the first city that comes to mind, the charming city of Brno holds its own when it comes to Christmas cheer.

Christmas markets in Brno are spread across several squares, each offering its unique atmosphere and charm:

  • Liberty Square (náměstí Svobody): The heart of the festivities, this square boasts the largest market and main stage, where you can enjoy live music and performances.
  • Zelnak (Zelný trh): This historic market square is home to a charming market with traditional crafts and delicious food.
  • Moravian Square (Moravské náměstí): Here you’ll find a smaller, more intimate market with a focus on local artisans and unique gifts.
  • Dominican Square: This market will be set aside for families, children, and all fans of good food. Children can enjoy the wooden nativity scene and the petting zoo. Adults will have the opportunity to taste both local and international cuisines.

Christmas markets on Liberty Square

The dynamic and lively Liberty Square is a place to meet, have fun, and make new friends. And this is no different during the Brno Christmas.

Where and when will the markets take place?

Charity

Advent is a time for sharing, and the Brno Christmas event will provide several opportunities to help those in need.

If you want to assist the less fortunate, head to Freedom Square where you can donate money via a collection box. In return, you will receive a small snack and have the chance to interact with kind people from various charitable organizations.

Red Cross donation boxes will be placed under the Christmas tree at Freedom Square and Dominican Square. The donations will benefit rehabilitation programs for children in foster care, senior citizens, and socially disadvantaged individuals and families.

Christmas Tree Lighting

On December 13, 2024, it will be the 100th anniversary of the first lighting of the Christmas tree in Brno, as the first public Christmas tree in Central Europe was lit in Brno in 1924. This year, the Christmas tree on Liberty Square will be lit on November 22, 2024.

Daily cultural programmes

  • The program starts with performances by local schoolchildren, students from performing arts schools, and ensembles.
  • Afternoons will feature theater performances, while evenings will showcase swing, jazz, pop, folklore, and other genres.
  • Additionally, ensure you do not miss the traditional Czech Television Advent concerts, storytelling for children, and the event known as “The Czech Republic Sings Carols.”

Along with the tree lighting, there will be a vibrant Christmas market offering a variety of specialties and gifts.

Don’t miss this heartwarming and joyous event!

Christmas markets on Zelnak

Zelný trh aka Zelňák, one of the most beautiful squares in Brno, has its own shimmering Christmas, making it even more romantic.

22.11.2024 – 23.12.2024

The Advent celebration at Zelňák will be traditional and peaceful, featuring a Christmas tree as the focal point.

More than 100 stands will showcase handmade products such as ceramics, bath salts, and Christmas decorations. You can also admire the work of blacksmiths, candle makers, soap makers, bell makers, and bookbinders.

Visitors can also enjoy food and drink stalls.

A live music program will be featured on the stage from Monday to Sunday, running from 5.00 pm to 10.00 pm. This family-friendly event will also include performances by children and students from kindergartens, primary schools, and art schools.

Moravian Square and Dominican Square Markets

Moravian Square aka Moravák is the place to be! You can support local charities at the non-profit stands and take a spin on the sightseeing bike for a unique view of the city. Plus, the ice rink is back, perfect for a festive family outing.

Dominican Square is the perfect choice for attending the Brno Christmas market with children or grandchildren, thanks to its peaceful atmosphere. The main attraction is a large wooden nativity scene by Czech woodcarver Jiri Halouzka. Halouzek’s naivity scene is one of the largest handmade nativity scenes in Central Europe. Featuring hundreds of figures set against the backdrop of the New Town Hall and St. Michael’s Church, creating a truly breathtaking sight.

When you are near St. Michael’s Church, be sure to visit the large carved Christmas star – it’s enchanting! The star is one of the symbols of Brno Christmas and is the main Christmas decoration of Dominican Square, along with Halouzek’s nativity scene. Thanks to the delicate style of carving, it looks as if it were made of lace, and its charm is heightened when it is lit up.
