Interesting places in Ribe
The town of Ribe is located in the west of the Jutland Peninsula, not far from the North Sea and approximately 80 km from the border with Germany. It is considered the oldest town not only in Denmark but in the whole of Scandinavia. It was allegedly founded in the 8th century.
The town’s history is evident in its well-preserved buildings, including the iconic Old Town Hall in Ribe. This historic landmark reminds visitors of the town’s significance as a trading hub during the Middle Ages.
Ribe Domkirke – Cathedral in Ribe
This cathedral has been a dominant feature of the entire historic center since at least 948, as evidenced by its oldest written mention. It is the oldest cathedral in Denmark and allegedly the best-preserved Romanesque building in the country.
Most of the original Romanesque construction consists of limestone tuff mined in the vicinity of Cologne and transported to Denmark via the Rhine. Despite the addition of Gothic elements, the core has preserved its Romanesque appearance to this day. The later additions are mostly of red brick and are clearly visible on the outside of the cathedral.
Historic Quarter and Taarnborg
From Torvet Square, several narrow streets lead to the historic center of the town, which is filled with half-timbered buildings. Puggårdsgade, where Taarnborg is located, is one of the most beautiful streets. This originally manor house from the 16th century is notable for the fact that none of its lines have an angle that measures exactly ninety degrees, which gives the building a rather wobbly feel.
While in Ribe, be sure to visit the Christmas markets in Aalborg, located in the northern part of the Jutland Peninsula.
Wadden Sea National Park
Visit the Wadden Sea National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its diverse wildlife and unique ecosystem. Take a boat tour to see seals basking in the sun or go birdwatching along the coast.
