Valkenburg Christmas Market Program
Valkenburg boasts the oldest, largest, and most visited underground Christmas market in Europe. The fair is held in centuries-old corridors and caves and has a unique atmosphere. The caves in which the Valkenburg Christmas markets are held can be visited all year round, but they have an even more special atmosphere during Advent.
The beautiful environment and scenery blend harmoniously with the stalls with beautiful Christmas and gift items. Of course, there are also snacks and drinks, which visitors can enjoy at the stands, in the catering zone, and outside on the square.
Gemeentegrot (Municipal Cave)
One of Europe’s most notable Christmas markets is known for its vast array of gifts. However, the impressive structures of the caves, rather than just the merchandise, truly contribute to the event’s popularity. The entrance is located at the base of the famous Cauberg hill.
Fluweelengrot (Velvet Cave)
This market, slightly smaller than the Gemeentegrot, contains drawings and sculptures. As it’s smaller, it’s also usually a bit less crowded, which means it’s easier to get to the stalls. This market takes place in a labyrinth beneath the castle ruins of Valkenburg, featuring winding corridors that lead you to an array of Christmas merchandise and all the festive elements for a heartwarming holiday outing!
The MergelRijk cave
The cave is full of lights, Christmas trees, sand sculptures, marble Christmas statues, and beautiful decorations. You can see many beautiful sculptures here, including Rembrandt’s life-size Night Watch. The MergelRijk Cave is decorated with Christmas miniatures and other festive elements during Christmas.
