  • Divide the dough in half and roll each half into an oblong cylinder with a diameter of about two inches.
  • Wrap the rolls in cling film and leave them to harden in the fridge for about an hour.
  • Using a sharp knife, cut the cooled rolls of dough into rounds about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Line a lightly greased tray with baking paper.
  • Place the wheels on a lined tray and bake in a preheated oven at 340°F for 13 minutes.
  • Let the candy cool for about 5 minutes.
  • While it is still warm, roll it in powdered sugar, flavored with vanilla pods (optional).

Interesting facts about Masaryk’s confectionery

The traditional recipe for Masaryk sugar comes from the 1920s when Czechoslovakia was founded, and TG Masaryk became the first president.

It is said that this candy was his favorite and, therefore, got its name after him. Allegedly, his mother made it for him in Lány; at that time, it was still known as hazelnut candy.

Masaryk’s sweets are incredibly easy to prepare and, at the same time, taste great. People love it for its buttery fragility and incredible nutty aroma. Hazelnuts are often used, but you can replace them with walnuts or almonds.
